Wine and food motorhome routes

Cava cellars, vineyards on slate terraces, a medieval charterhouse, salted anchovies and rice paddies by the sea: these motorhome routes are best enjoyed with your taste buds. Here is what to try on each one and how to do it responsibly.

In a motorhome, every market and winery becomes your larder: you buy cheese, cured meats, olive oil, rice or wine straight from the producer, keep it in the 78-litre fridge and cook with a view of the vines. From our base next to Granollers, the Penedès is less than an hour away and the Priorat about two hours. The grape harvest, from late August to October depending on area and year, is the liveliest time.

One non-negotiable rule: whoever drives does not drink. Choose a designated driver for each day, use the spittoon at tastings and keep purchases for the boot. Ideally, schedule winery visits at the end of the day and sleep nearby on a campsite or authorised aire, without moving the vehicle again until the next day with a clear head. At Segimon Rental we will remind you at handover: safety comes first.

What you can see

Cava cellars in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

Cava cellars in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

The capital of cava has dozens of producers, many with underground cellars where the wine undergoes its second fermentation in the bottle. Several offer guided tours with tastings: book ahead and let the non-drivers do the tasting.

Priorat terraced vineyards

Priorat terraced vineyards

Garnacha and Carignan grow on steep slopes of llicorella, a dark slate that gives character to DOQ Priorat wines, one of only two top-tier qualified appellations in Spain. The terraces are best seen from the roads linking the villages.

Penedès vineyards

Penedès vineyards

Between Montserrat and the sea, the Penedès is the land of xarel·lo, macabeo and parellada, the grapes behind cava. Many family wineries show their vineyards and cellars on booked visits, and in September the harvest fills the lanes. Whoever drives does not drink: spitting at tastings is perfectly normal.

L'Escala anchovies

L'Escala anchovies

Salting anchovies is a centuries-old fishing tradition in L'Escala, which even has a museum devoted to anchovies and salt. Buy a jar from one of the town's producers and combine it with a visit to Empúries, a short walk along the seafront.

Ebro Delta rice

Ebro Delta rice

Delta rice has protected designation of origin status. In spring the fields are flooded, in summer they become a sea of green and in September the harvest begins. Try it in Deltebre or Sant Jaume d'Enveja, along with mussels and oysters from the bays.

Étang de Thau oysters

Étang de Thau oysters

Between Sète and Bouzigues, oyster and mussel farming tables dot the Thau lagoon. Many producers sell and serve shellfish by the water, a classic stop on our southern France route. Spring and autumn are ideal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit wineries by motorhome in the Penedès and the Priorat?

Yes. Many wineries have large car parks, but book your visit and ask whether a motorhome of almost 7 metres fits comfortably. In the Priorat, roads are narrow and winding: drive slowly and avoid unpaved tracks.

When is the grape harvest in the Penedès and the Priorat?

It usually runs from late August to October, starting with white grapes for cava and ending with the red varieties of the Priorat. Dates change every year with the weather, so check each winery's events calendar.

How do I do a wine route by motorhome responsibly?

Choose a driver who will not drink, use the spittoon at tastings and plan the last visit of the day close to where you will sleep. Do not move the vehicle until you are sure you can drive completely safely.
