What you need
- Five unhurried minutes
- This list, saved on your phone
- A travelling companion to check with you, if you have one
Step by step
Close skylights and windows
Start at the top: close all the roof skylights and check they are properly latched. An open skylight can be ripped off by the wind as you drive. Then close all the side windows and roll up the fly screens and blinds if needed.
Secure the inside
Put away anything loose on the table, worktop or beds. Close cupboards, drawers and the washroom door until you hear them click. Lock the fridge door so it cannot open on a bend. Leave the sink empty and nothing on the hob.
Switch off appliances and check the gas
Switch off the hob, the inverter and any lights you do not need. The heating can stay on while driving thanks to the regulator with crash sensor, but switch it off when refuelling or boarding a ferry. Check the gas locker is closed and no bottle can move.
Disconnect cables and hoses
Unplug the CEE cable, first from the bollard and then from the motorhome, and stow it. Remove the hose if it was connected and close the water filler cap. Check the grey water valve is closed and the toilet hatch is shut properly.
Clear the outside
Wind the awning in fully and stow the handle. Bring in the table, chairs and mat. Check the entrance step is retracted, if you had put it out. If you carry bikes, make sure they are firmly strapped to the bike rack. Look at the roof: nothing should be left loose on top.
Drive off the ramps and walk round
If you used levelling ramps, drive off them carefully and stow them. Walk all the way round the motorhome: doors and lockers closed, nothing under the wheels, nothing hanging off. Also look for branches, posts or children nearby before moving.
Final checks in the cab
Lock the habitation door with its security lock. Adjust the seat and mirrors, check everyone has their seatbelt on and look at the dashboard for warning lights, including fuel and AdBlue levels. You are ready to go.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really have to do this every time?
Yes, before every journey, even if you are only moving the motorhome a few metres. After a couple of days it becomes second nature.
Will you explain all this at handover?
Yes. At Segimon Rental we go through each point in the motorhome itself before you leave. If it is your first trip, read our first motorhome trip guide too.
