Vall de Boí Romanesque churches by motorhome

The nine UNESCO-listed Romanesque churches of the Vall de Boí, with a stop at Lleida's Seu Vella and a day in Aigüestortes National Park.

In a valley of the Alta Ribagorça, just over three hours from our base in Les Franqueses del Vallès, stand nine Romanesque churches listed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2000. They are only a few kilometres apart, in stone villages surrounded by meadows and forest, right next to Aigüestortes National Park.

The route is a five-day rental, so five nights: you collect the motorhome on the afternoon of day 1, drive up via Lleida and the N-230, spend three days in the valley and return it on the morning of day 6. With 4 days (the mid-season minimum), drop the Aigüestortes outing; in July and August the minimum is 7 days, which leaves time for extra walks or other valleys.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 · Pick-up and a short first leg to Cervera

You collect the motorhome between 16:00 and 19:00 and, after the handover, head west on the AP-7 and A-2. In just over an hour you reach Cervera, capital of the Segarra, with a medieval old town and the vast 18th-century former university building. It is a short dual-carriageway stage, ideal for getting used to the V66. Spend the night at a campsite or an authorised motorhome area nearby.

Day 2 · Lleida's Seu Vella, El Pont de Suert and Barruera

Lleida is less than an hour away. The Seu Vella, the old cathedral, crowns a hill above the city and makes a fine prelude to the Romanesque: park below and walk up (check opening times and tickets). Then the N-230 follows the Noguera Ribagorçana river up to El Pont de Suert, a good place to stock up. Enter the Vall de Boí and finish at Barruera, where Sant Feliu stands by the road, the first of the nine churches.

Day 3 · Cardet, Erill la Vall, Boí and Taüll

Start at Cardet, where Santa Maria clings to the slope and its apse sits above a small crypt. Continue to Erill la Vall: the Centre del Romànic explains the whole ensemble and runs visits, and next door Santa Eulàlia shows off a six-storey bell tower. In Boí, Sant Joan displays reproductions of its wall paintings. End in Taüll with Sant Climent and Santa Maria, both consecrated in 1123; the original murals are in the MNAC in Barcelona.

Day 4 · Aigüestortes from Boí

Today is about nature. From Boí, private vehicles cannot drive into Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park: you go up in the authorised 4x4 taxis or on foot from the designated car park. At the top, the Planell d'Aigüestortes is a flat valley of meandering streams and meadows with easy paths for all levels. Take water, a warm layer and walking boots, even if it is hot down below. Sleep in the valley again.

Day 5 · Durro, Sant Quirc, Cóll and down to Lleida

Durro is home to the Nativitat, one of the largest churches in the valley. From the village, a footpath climbs to the hermitage of Sant Quirc, with views over the whole valley. Complete the set at Cóll, where l'Assumpció sits in a small, quiet village. In the afternoon, start heading back: just over two hours on the N-230 to the Lleida area. On the morning of day 6, the dual carriageway gets you to the Vallès in under two hours, in time to return the motorhome between 9:00 and 12:00.

Where to sleep

The Vall de Boí and the Alta Ribagorça have campsites, and some villages have authorised motorhome areas. Demand is high in summer and on bank holidays, so book ahead. For the nights near Cervera and Lleida, Park4Night or Campercontact help you find areas and check for water and waste points. There are more ideas in our guide to where to sleep in a motorhome.

You may park wherever any vehicle may park, as long as you are not camping: no awning, chairs or levelling chocks, and no emptying of waste water. Wild camping is not permitted in Catalonia, and around Aigüestortes the restrictions are stricter. Follow the signs and each municipality's by-laws.

Practical tips

  • The valley villages are small and steep. At 2.74 m high and 2.14 m wide, park at the entrance to Taüll, Durro, Cardet or Cóll and walk in.
  • The churches have set visiting hours and admission fees, and there is a combined ticket for several of them. Check opening times and tickets at the Centre del Romànic before planning your day.
  • Fill the fresh-water tank (116 L) and do your shopping in El Pont de Suert: supplies in the valley are more limited.
  • Even in summer, nights are cool at 1,500 m. The V66's Truma heating takes care of it; keep an eye on the gas bottles. See what to pack for a motorhome trip.
  • The route covers about 650 km: with the 300 km a day included in Segimon Rental's 3 to 6-day rentals, you have plenty to spare.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for the Vall de Boí Romanesque churches by motorhome?

Five, as in this plan, lets you see all nine churches calmly and add a day in Aigüestortes. With four, the mid-season minimum, skip Aigüestortes. The low-season minimum is 3 days, but the drive from the Vallès takes up a good part of that; in July, August, Christmas and Easter it is 7.

Which Romanesque churches of the Vall de Boí are World Heritage?

Sant Climent and Santa Maria de Taüll, Sant Joan de Boí, Santa Eulàlia d'Erill la Vall, the Nativitat de Durro, Sant Quirc de Durro, Sant Feliu de Barruera, Santa Maria de Cardet and l'Assumpció de Cóll.

Where can you sleep in a motorhome in the Vall de Boí?

At campsites and authorised areas in the valley and the Alta Ribagorça. You may park where parking is allowed as long as you do not camp, but wild camping is not permitted and protected areas have further restrictions.

Can you drive a motorhome up to Aigüestortes from Boí?

Not into the park itself: private vehicle access is restricted. You park at the entrance and go up on foot or by authorised 4x4 taxi. For more of the mountains, our Catalan Pyrenees route crosses the range from east to west.
