How to fill the motorhome fresh water tank

Filling up with water is one of the first things you will do, and one of the simplest: a tap, the hose provided and a few minutes. Here is where to do it, how to avoid the wrong cap and how to tell when the tank is full.

What you need

  • The hose and adaptors (included)
  • The key for the filler cap
  • A drinking-water tap at a campsite or service area

Step by step

  1. Find a drinking-water point

Always fill up at campsites and motorhome service areas with a signposted drinking-water tap. Avoid public fountains, cemetery taps or irrigation taps: in many places it is not allowed and the water is not always safe to drink. Park so the hose reaches from the tap to the side of the vehicle without stretching.

  2. Find the right cap

The water filler cap is marked with a water symbol and opens with its key. Do not confuse it with the diesel or AdBlue filler, which are near the cab and have different caps. Putting fuel or AdBlue into the water tank would cause serious damage, so always check the symbol.

  3. Prepare the hose

Choose the adaptor that fits the tap; there are several on board. Before putting the hose into the tank, let the water run for a few seconds to rinse the inside of the hose and check it runs clear. Keep the end clean and off the ground.

  4. Close the FrostControl drain valve

The Truma heater has a safety valve that drains the boiler if it gets very cold. If it is open, the water will simply run out under the vehicle. Check it is closed before filling; we show you where it is and how to close it at handover.

  5. Fill the tank

Put the end of the hose into the filler and open the tap to a moderate flow. The tank holds 116 litres, so it takes a few minutes. You can follow the level on the control panel inside. When it is full, water will start to overflow from the filler.

  6. Close up and pack away

Turn off the tap, remove the hose and lock the cap with its key. Drain the hose, coil it and store it with the adaptors. Inside, switch on the water pump from the panel and open a tap for a few seconds until the water runs without air: the sink and shower are ready.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a tank of water last?

It depends on use. For two people, with short showers and careful washing up, it usually lasts two or three days; with long showers, much less. Remember the grey water tank (92 litres) fills up too and will need emptying.

Can I drink the water from the tank?

If you filled it from a drinking-water tap and the tank is clean, yes, although many people prefer to drink bottled water and use the tank for cooking, washing up and showering.

Where can I find water points?

At campsites and motorhome service areas. Apps such as Park4Night or Campercontact show which ones have water. More ideas in our guide to where to sleep in a motorhome.
