Winter motorhome trips in Catalonia: snow, Christmas and calçots

Ski slopes two hours from home, Christmas markets glowing with lights and mulled wine, chargrilled calçots and thousands of birds wintering in the Delta. Winter is a great season for a motorhome, provided the vehicle is built for the cold and you plan sensibly.

The Segimon Rental Sunlight V66 is winter ready: Truma Combi 4 heating with EisEx frost protection and a heated grey-water tank. Snow chains are an optional extra at €20; if you are heading into the mountains, take them and check road conditions beforehand with the Servei Català de Trànsit, the DGT or, in France, Bison Futé. You will find all the details in our winter motorhome guide and, for the slopes, in our guide to skiing by motorhome.

November to March is low season: a 3-day minimum and €125 a day, the lowest price of the year. Christmas and Easter are high season, with a 7-day minimum; for festive atmosphere at a lower cost, late November, the early-December bank holiday or January are good alternatives (dates are approximate, so check the booking calendar). Days are short: drive in daylight, reach the campsite early and keep the evenings for a stroll and a hot dinner.

What you can see

Skiing at La Molina, Masella and Grandvalira

Skiing at La Molina, Masella and Grandvalira

La Molina and Masella, in the Cerdanya, are about two hours from Granollers; Grandvalira, in Andorra, a little further. With a motorhome your boots stay dry, lunch is ready and bed is close at hand. Sleep only on campsites or authorised areas, carry chains and bring passports or ID for Andorra, letting us know before pick-up.

Christmas markets in Carcassonne and Montpellier

Christmas markets in Carcassonne and Montpellier

Over the border, Carcassonne's Cité fills with lights and stalls in December, and Montpellier holds Les Hivernales on the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle, roughly from late November to late December. Mulled wine, cheese and crafts. Check dates on the official listings and tell us if you are taking the van to France.

The Mercat Medieval de Vic

The Mercat Medieval de Vic

Usually held over the early-December bank holiday weekend, it brings more than 400 artisans to the streets and Plaça Major of Vic, with free entry. It is less than an hour from our base. Arrive early, park on the outskirts and carry on to Girona and Besalú; the area's living nativity scenes start in late December.

A calçotada in Valls

A calçotada in Valls

Calçot season runs roughly from November to April, and the Gran Festa de la Calçotada in Valls is held on the last Sunday of January. Chargrilled calçots, romesco sauce, a bib and a porró of wine. Book a restaurant well ahead for weekends and pair it with the Cistercian monasteries nearby.

Flamingos and wintering ducks in the Delta

Flamingos and wintering ducks in the Delta

In winter the Ebro Delta hosts thousands of ducks and other birds that spend the cold months here, alongside the resident flamingos. Flooded rice fields and the Encanyissada and Tancada lagoons are good spots. Use the viewing towers and hides, and bring binoculars and a windproof jacket.

Morella in winter

Morella in winter

The walled town of Morella, inland in Castellón, crowns a hill with its castle and medieval ramparts. Winters here are genuinely cold and it sometimes snows, which gives the place a special feel. Leave the motorhome outside the old town, with its narrow, steep streets, and walk up.

Frequently asked questions

Can you travel in a motorhome in winter?

Yes, as long as the vehicle is prepared. The V66 has Truma heating with EisEx frost protection and a heated grey-water tank. Plan short stages, check road conditions, carry chains in the mountains and stay on campsites open in winter or authorised areas.

Is it cold inside a motorhome in winter?

Not with good heating. The Truma Combi 4 warms the interior quickly and holds the temperature all night, even with frost outside. Keep an eye on the gas, air the van briefly in the morning to avoid condensation and plug into campsite electricity when you can.

Can you sleep at a ski resort in a motorhome?

Only where it is authorised. Some resorts have motorhome areas and others do not allow it, so check with the resort before you go. The safest option is a campsite in the valley, a few minutes from the slopes.
