The best time for a motorhome trip in Catalonia, month by month

You can tour Catalonia by motorhome all year round: the coast in spring, the Pyrenees in summer, colourful forests in autumn and snow in winter. Here is a month-by-month look at weather, crowds and rental seasons to help you pick your dates.

In short: spring and autumn

If you remember only one thing, make it this: May, June, September and October are the best-balanced months. The weather is good almost everywhere, the coast is not overcrowded, campsites have space and you pay mid-season rates.

Summer is the most popular time, but also the most expensive and crowded, and the heat is intense on the coast and inland. Winter is quiet and good value, perfect for snowy mountains if you travel in a motorhome built for the cold.

Rental seasons (approximate)

The exact dates of each season are in the booking calendar; these are approximate, with the daily price including VAT and the minimum rental:

  • Low season, roughly November to March except Christmas and Easter: €125/day, 3-day minimum.
  • Mid season, roughly April to June plus September and October: €150/day, 4-day minimum.
  • High season, July, Christmas and Easter: €180/day, 7-day minimum.
  • Peak season, August and special dates: €210/day, 7-day minimum.

Winter: December, January and February

On the coast, winters tend to be mild and sunny, though nights are cold. In the Pyrenees and Andorra it is ski season, usually from December to March or April depending on snow. The coast and inland villages are very quiet, but bear in mind that many campsites close in winter, so check which ones are open before you go.

  • December: early-month bank holidays, Christmas markets and the first snowfalls. The Christmas period itself is high season.
  • January: the coldest month. Ideal for snow in Cerdanya, Andorra or the Vall d'Aran, and for a near-empty coast.
  • February: slightly longer days, carnivals and sometimes almond blossom in southern Catalonia. Good snow in the Pyrenees.

Spring: March, April and May

One of the best times to travel. Days lengthen, the countryside is green and temperatures are pleasant for walking. Snow can linger in the high mountains, and some mountain passes may close or require chains early in the season, so check road conditions.

  • March: the end of low season and of the ski season. Garrotxa, Montseny and the Ebro Delta are calm.
  • April: Easter (high season, busy on the coast and in the mountains) and Sant Jordi on 23 April. Outside those dates, spring at its finest.
  • May: probably the best month for the Costa Brava, with quiet coves and lovely light. The Delta's rice fields are flooded.

Summer: June, July and August

It is hot, especially inland and on the coast, where the humidity is noticeable at night. The Pyrenees are the great escape: milder temperatures, lakes and trails, although afternoon thunderstorms are common. It is the busiest time on beaches and at campsites, so book ahead.

  • June: mid season, very long days and the sea already pleasant. Sant Joan's Eve, the night of the 23rd, is celebrated all over Catalonia.
  • July: high season. Head for the mountains (Catalan Pyrenees, Vall d'Aran, the Alps) or the south of France rather than the Catalan coast.
  • August: peak season, with the biggest crowds and village festivals everywhere. Book campsites well in advance and avoid peak departure times.

Autumn: September, October and November

The sea is still warm in September, the crowds leave and the grape harvest begins. Autumn can bring spells of heavy rain on the coast, so keep an eye on forecasts. From late October into November, beech woods and riverside forests turn yellow and red.

  • September: mid season, quiet beaches and the grape harvest in Priorat and Penedès. La Diada, on 11 September, is a public holiday in Catalonia.
  • October: autumn colours in Garrotxa, Montseny and the Vall d'Aran, plus mushroom and chestnut season. Ideal for Cathar Country or Andorra.
  • November: low season returns. Forests at their best, short days and cool nights: put the heating on.

Winter travel in a winter-ready motorhome

The motorhome we rent is equipped for winter: Truma Combi 4 heating with EisEx frost protection and a heated grey water tank, so water does not freeze on cold mountain nights. The lithium battery performs well as long as the living area is kept warm (it should not be charged below 0 °C), though the solar panel charges less on short days.

In very cold weather gas consumption rises. At Segimon Rental we hand over the bottles full; return them full or the gas used will be charged. If you are heading into snow, add snow chains as an extra (€20) and practise fitting them before you need them. For Andorra, remember it is outside the EU: carry your passport or ID card and check the insurance with us.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for a motorhome trip in Catalonia?

May, June, September and October are usually the best balanced: good weather, fewer people and mid-season rates. For snow, January to March; for the Pyrenees without the heat, July.

Can you travel by motorhome in winter?

Yes. Our motorhome has Truma heating with frost protection and a heated grey water tank. Just allow for higher gas use, carry chains if you are going into snow and check which campsites are open.

When is it cheapest to rent a motorhome?

In low season, roughly November to March except Christmas and Easter: €125 a day with a 3-day minimum. Exact dates are shown in the booking calendar.
