What you need
- Gas in the bottles with the valves open
- A charged battery (the fan runs on 12 V)
- Water in the tank, if you want hot water
Step by step
Get to know the Truma CP Plus panel
The Truma Combi 4 runs on gas and heats both the air and the water in its boiler. It is controlled from the CP Plus panel, using a knob that turns and also presses: turn to move through the menu, press to confirm. At handover we go through it together in the motorhome.
Check gas and battery
Before switching on, make sure there is gas in the bottles and the valves are open. The burner runs on gas, but the fan and electronics need the battery, so it should have some charge. Check that the outside flue is not blocked by snow, leaves or a wall too close by.
Switch on the heating
On the panel, select the heating symbol and choose the inside temperature you want; 18 to 21 °C is usually comfortable. Press the knob to confirm. Within a few minutes you will feel warm air from the vents. To warm up faster, close the blinds and skylights, but always leave some ventilation open.
Turn on the hot water
Select the hot water symbol and choose the level: eco mode heats to around 40 °C, enough for washing up and showers; the higher mode reaches around 60 °C and takes a little longer. In summer you can run the hot water on its own, without heating. Remember the boiler needs water in the tank.
Understand the FrostControl valve
To stop the boiler being damaged by ice, the FrostControl safety valve opens by itself and drains it when it is very cold and the heating is off. You will see water running out under the vehicle. It can only be closed again once the temperature is above about 7 °C; we show you where it is at handover.
Use the heating in winter
On frosty nights, leave the heating on at a low temperature rather than switching it off: that way the water does not freeze and the boiler does not drain. Use propane, which works in the cold, and the EisEx system stops the regulator icing up. If you leave the motorhome unheated in a frost, drain the water.
Switch it off properly
To switch off, select off on the panel; the fan may keep running for a while to cool the unit, which is normal. If you will not need hot water on cold days, consider draining the boiler. When you return the motorhome, leave it switched off as you found it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sleep with the heating on?
Yes, the Truma is designed for it: it is a room-sealed heater that draws air from outside and vents the fumes outside. Set it to a moderate temperature and keep the ventilation clear.
How much gas does it use?
It depends on the outside temperature and the setting you choose. In midwinter it uses far more than in autumn. That is why the regulator switches to the second bottle automatically when the first runs out.
Is the motorhome suitable for snow?
Yes, it is equipped for winter, with a heated grey water tank. Read our winter motorhome guide before heading to the mountains.
